Preparation guide for newborn session

Your newborn session is designed to be calm, slow, and completely baby-led. The information below will help you feel prepared, confident, and relaxed before you arrive.

Understanding Newborn Behaviour

Newborns are beautifully unpredictable. Some babies sleep deeply, others prefer to stretch and observe. Both are perfectly normal.

During the first few weeks babies are still adjusting to life outside the womb.

  • They are most comfortable when warm, gently supported, and fed regularly.

If Baby Cries

  • Crying is communication — We pause, feed, cuddle and reset.

  • Bringing a dummy/pacifier (even if you don't plan to use it regularly it can really help settle baby when nothing else works).

The goal is to help keep the baby happy and calm during your session and is only used if assistance is needed to capture certain poses and won’t create any habit forming behaviour.

The 24 Hours Before Your Session

To help your baby be comfortable and settled:

  • Avoid scheduling vaccinations on the same day or the day before.

  • Try not to plan multiple outings beforehand — an overstimulated baby can find it harder to settle.

  • If your baby has scratched their face, has acne or rash don’t worry — this is very common and can be softened in editing.

Clothing & Preparation

For Baby:

  • Dress baby in something loose and easy to remove.

  • Dress baby in a loose zip or button-up sleeper only.

  • No vests or tight clothing underneath.

  • Avoid outfits that need to go over the head. This helps us undress baby without waking them.

For Parents:

  • Choose soft, neutral tones that complement skin tones.

  • Avoid smart watches and hair ties on wrists.

  • Avoid big logos, stripes, flowery outfits, overcrowded designs that take the attention from the baby&family. The goal is timeless, not trendy.

Feeding & Settling

Rather than focusing on strict timing, focus on a relaxed, unhurried feed before you leave.

  • A calm, complete feed is more important than the exact minute it happens.

  • If breastfeeding, try to avoid rushing — babies sense tension.

  • If bottle feeding, bring more milk than you think you’ll need.

Cluster feeding during the session is completely normal and expected.

What the Studio Will Feel Like

The studio environment is intentionally warm and peaceful.

  • Gentle white noise mimics the womb.

  • Transitions between poses are gradual.

  • Try brining an extra change of clothes in case you'll get too warm

If at any point you feel unsure, you are always welcome to let me know. This is a collaborative experience.

Safety

Not every baby will achieve every pose — and that is perfectly fine.

I work within your baby’s flexibility, their comfort levels, their natural sleep depth and safety is always a priority.

Some images you may see in portfolios are created as composites (multiple images safely merged together). Your baby will never be forced into a position.

Siblings and Family

Young children typically have a short window of cooperation. For that reason:

  • Sibling and family portraits are completed in the beginning of the session

  • After their turn, it’s often helpful for them to be taken out (home or for a walk with another adult).

This keeps the environment calm for baby. These sessions can feel long and boring for a toddler however they are welcome to stay if there is no way to take them home.

I am honoured you’ve trusted me with this fleeting stage. I look forward to welcoming your family.
