How do I choose a newborn photographer ?

You just found out you are expecting a new little bundle of joy ? Now is the time to think about hiring a photographer to capture the first precious moments of your baby's life . Your little one will only be this small for a short period of time, so it is important to secure your newborn photoshoot on time and find the right newborn photographer.

Newborn photography is an unarguably unique genre of photography. The newborn photographer not only will be creating memories to last for lifetimes, but they will also be caring for your new baby during the session therefore you want to make sure that your baby is in good hands.

I put together a list of things to consider when choosing your newborn photographer hoping that it will make its way across the vast realm of the internet and reach every new parent.

  1. SAFETY

Safety should be number one priority for any newborn photographer. Unfortunately there is no qualification that a newborn photographer needs to achieve in order to become one.If you haven't researched or asked your newborn photographer what training and experience they have or understand how they ensure the baby is posed safely, maybe it's time to do it.When it's about your baby's well being, there is no imposition .Does your photographer take ongoing classes to properly handle, pose and keep your baby safe? Does your photographer do composite images? Composite images are always 2 or 3 images taken separately and then put together in photoshop to make one image to keep the baby safe . This is very important as a baby should be left in a position to completely hold their own weight. I personally have taken newborn safety classes and keep myself educated continuously, I pay a great attention to the baby's safety and handle them with extra care.

2. EXPERIENCE

You are handing your newborn baby over to an almost complete stranger so make sure they know what they are doing by checking how many years they have been in business, if they educate themselves every year to learn about safety and ultimately do they have an education in photography. I have 5+ years in newborn photography and I handled and posed over 500 babies over the years, plus I trained with one of the best newborn photographers in the UK.

3. STYLE

Every photographer has their own style just as you have your own style for dressing. There are so many different styles of newborn photography, and none is right or wrong. It is important to note what style you are drawn to and find a photographer that does it well. You could love the posed newborn style, in the studio, using different props or outfits or just lifestyle sessions, or even unposed sessions. During a posed newborn session, your sleeping baby is gently positioned into adorable curled up poses, snuggly wrapped, and placed in cute props. This type of session takes a high level of experience from the photographer and generally lasts 2 to 3 hours. Make sure you really look at their website or social media to make sure you like their style and it goes with your home where you will be displaying the images. At MHB Photography, I have all it takes to achieve those curled, wrapped posed images safely and designed specially for your home.

4. BUDGET

The cost for newborn portraiture can vary greatly. Some things to take into consideration are your location, session duration, the photographer’s experience, their level of training, and equipment used by the potential photographer. It is important to remember that newborn photographers put much more into a session than just the time spent with you. A photographer running a legal business with insurance, lots of training and other business expenses will almost always be more expensive. When booking your session, always remember, you get what you pay for. Cheap photography might sound like a great idea but you should ask yourself why.

5. LOCATION

This is important but not decisive in taking the decision to hire a newborn photographer. When you like someone's style and they tick every single box, it's impossible not to take into consideration traveling . In the end those photos will be with you and your baby for the rest of your life and if the photos are worth a little bit of extra time, then why not. Derby Studio
