Bringing Colour Back into Newborn Photography

There’s a quiet shift happening in newborn photography right now. For a while, everything leaned into soft neutrals—creams, whites, beige tones, minimal styling. And while that timeless look will always have its place, I’ve found myself craving something a little different again.

Something with personality. Something with feeling.

So when I styled a recent baby girl session using soft lavender tones, it honestly felt like a breath of fresh air.

A return to colour (and why it matters)

Colour has a way of changing the entire mood of a session.

Where neutrals feel calm and understated, soft colour brings warmth and emotion. Lavender, in particular, has this beautiful balance—it’s gentle enough to still feel timeless, but it adds just enough depth to make the images feel alive.

In a world that’s been very “beige everything,” it felt exciting to lean back into styling that has a little more character.

Not loud. Not overwhelming. Just softly intentional.

This is something I’m now exploring more within my newborn photography Derby sessions—bringing subtle colour choices into carefully styled setups while still keeping everything soft, natural, and timeless.

Why I’m leaning back into colour

I’ll always love neutrals. They’re classic for a reason.

But colour adds something extra—it helps tell a story.

For baby girls especially, soft tones like lavender, blush, or muted peach can bring a subtle personality into the images without overpowering the simplicity of newborn photography.

It’s not about being bold for the sake of it. It’s about choosing tones that feel right for the baby, the family, and the emotion you want to capture.

This approach also reflects the evolving style of baby photography Derby, where more parents are looking for imagery that feels personal, warm, and slightly more expressive than traditional neutral-only setups.

Finding the balance

For me, the goal is never to follow trends too rigidly.

It’s about balance:

  • Clean, timeless posing

  • Soft, intentional styling

  • And just enough colour to make it feel personal

Sometimes that means pure neutrals. Sometimes it means bringing lavender back into the frame and remembering how beautiful colour can be.

Every session is shaped around the baby and the family, whether it’s a full newborn session or a more simple newborn session Derby experience designed to keep things calm and baby-led.

Final thoughts

This session was a lovely reminder that creativity doesn’t have to stay in one lane. Trends will come and go, but the connection you feel when you’re creating something you genuinely enjoy always shows in the final images.

And right now… I’m definitely enjoying a little more colour again.

If you’re expecting and thinking about a newborn session, would you go for soft neutrals or something with a hint of colour?
