Cake Smash Photography FAQs: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Baby’s First Birthday Photoshoot
Your little one’s first birthday is a special milestone, and a cake smash photoshoot is a lovely way to celebrate it! From sweet little smiles and curious cake tasting to messy fingers and icing-covered cheeks, every baby reacts differently, making each session unique.
If you’re considering cake smash photography in Derby, you probably have a few questions before booking. Here are some of the most common questions I’m asked, along with everything you need to know to prepare for your baby’s session.

When should I book my baby’s cake smash photoshoot?
I recommend booking your cake smash session a few weeks before your baby’s first birthday. This gives you plenty of time to receive your edited photographs if you would like to use them for birthday invitations, decorations or a special birthday gift.
Most cake smash sessions take place when babies are around 11 months old, but we can discuss the best timing for your little one.
It’s worth booking in advance, particularly if you have a specific date in mind.
What happens during a cake smash photoshoot?
A cake smash session is more than just photographs of your baby eating cake!
We start with some lovely portraits of your little one before introducing the cake. This is a great opportunity to capture their expressions, smiles and personality before things get messy.
Next comes the cake smash itself. Some babies dive straight in, while others prefer to investigate the cake slowly, using one finger at a time. Some are fascinated by the icing, while others would rather play with the decorations!
There is no right or wrong way to do it. I let your baby explore at their own pace, capturing genuine expressions and little moments along the way.
We finish with a splash in a small bath, if included in your chosen package, to capture a few more adorable photographs while your baby enjoys a little clean-up.
Do I need to bring a cake?
This depends on your chosen package, so please check the details when booking.
If a cake is included, I will let you know what you need to prepare. If you are bringing your own, choose a soft cake that is easy for your baby to explore, with simple decorations and age-appropriate ingredients.
Please let me know about any allergies or dietary requirements before the session so we can discuss suitable options.
What should my baby wear?
Choose something comfortable that allows your baby to move freely and enjoy the experience.
Many parents love simple outfits, rompers or little birthday outfits that look lovely against the chosen backdrop. You can also bring a second outfit if you would like a different look for the cake smash.
If you have a particular colour scheme or birthday theme in mind, let me know when booking so we can discuss the available options.
The most important thing is that your baby feels comfortable and can enjoy the session without being restricted by their clothes.
What if my baby doesn't like the cake?
Don't worry! Not every baby wants to dive into a cake, and that is perfectly normal.
Some babies are unsure about the texture, while others are more interested in looking at the cake than touching it. I never force a baby to interact with something they don't enjoy.
We can encourage them gently with a little help from you, allowing time for curiosity to take over. Even if your baby doesn't smash the cake, we can still capture beautiful portraits and sweet little expressions.
Every session is different, and that is part of what makes these photographs special.
How long does a cake smash session last?
Allow enough time for your baby to settle in, become comfortable with the surroundings and enjoy the different parts of the session.
Babies need breaks, and we may need a little extra time for cuddles, feeding or changing. I work around your baby's needs rather than rushing through the session.
I will provide the details of the expected session length when you book.
What should I bring to the photoshoot?
A little preparation can make the experience much easier for everyone.
I recommend bringing:
Nappies and wipes.
A change of clothes for your baby.
A spare outfit for yourself, just in case!
Your baby's usual milk, snacks or a drink, as appropriate.
A favourite toy or comforter.
Any special birthday accessories you would like to include, if suitable for the chosen setup.
If your baby has any allergies or sensitivities, please mention these before the session.
What time of day is best for a cake smash?
The best time is usually when your baby is well-rested, fed and in a good mood.
For many babies, this means scheduling the session around their usual nap routine rather than booking at a time when they are likely to be tired.
You know your baby best, so we can discuss a suitable time when arranging your appointment.

Can parents and siblings be included?
Cake smash sessions are focused on celebrating your baby's first birthday, but it is lovely to include family photographs too.
If you would like photographs with mum, dad or siblings, please mention this when booking so we can discuss how to incorporate them into your session.
These family photographs are a wonderful addition to the individual portraits and cake smash images, giving you a fuller collection of memories from this milestone.
What happens if my baby gets messy?
That is all part of the fun!
Cake, icing and little hands tend to end up in unexpected places, so it is best to dress your baby in something you don't mind getting messy.
If your package includes a bath session, this gives us the opportunity to capture some final photographs while your baby enjoys splashing and playing.
Please bring a change of clothes for the journey home.
When will I receive my cake smash photographs?
After your session, I carefully select and edit the best images to create your final gallery.
The number of photographs included depends on the package you choose. If you would like additional images, you can ask about the available options.
If you are planning to use your photographs for a birthday celebration, please let me know your deadline when booking so we can discuss the expected turnaround time.
