What happens during a newborn photography session?

Once you arrive at my Derby home studio, we don't immediately start taking photographs.

There is time to settle in, get comfortable and make sure your baby is ready.

I work through a variety of poses and setups, moving gently between them depending on how settled your baby is.

The session may involve several feeds and breaks along the way.

I also look for the little moments that happen naturally — your baby's expressions, their interaction with you and those early newborn details.

The result is a mixture of carefully posed newborn portraits and photographs that capture this very special stage of your family's life.

How long does a newborn session take?

Allowing plenty of time is important because newborn photography cannot be rushed.

Some babies settle quickly, while others need considerably more time for feeding, winding or soothing.

Rather than watching the clock, I work at your baby's pace.

This relaxed approach also means that you don't need to worry if your baby doesn't behave exactly as you expected.

There is no such thing as a “perfect” newborn session.

What happens after the session?

After your photographs have been carefully selected and professionally edited, you will receive your finished images according to the package you have chosen.

I take great care when editing newborn photographs to create a polished, timeless finish while still keeping your baby's natural features and skin tones looking realistic.

Your photographs are then yours to enjoy and display for years to come.

The most important preparation is simply to relax

If there is one thing I would like new parents to know before their newborn photography session, it is this:

You don't need to be perfect. Your baby doesn't need to be perfect.

You have just welcomed a new person into your family, and there is already enough to think about.

You don't need to worry about whether your baby will sleep, whether they will cry, whether they will need several feeds or whether they will cooperate for every photograph.

That's my job.

My role as a newborn photographer is to create a calm environment, work safely and patiently with your baby, and guide you through the session so you can concentrate on enjoying this special time with your little one.

If you're looking for newborn photography in Derby, I would love to create beautiful, timeless photographs of these first days for you to treasure.
